The idea behind Monte de Piedad® came about in 1977 when founder Don Francisco was working as a manager at a supply chain store in San Diego. He noticed that many of the workers were living paycheck to paycheck. What little money they earned they spent as soon as they received it. These were good men who had families to feed, bills to pay and homes to care for.
Don Francisco, a smart and compassionate financier, began to lend them money to help them with something. He kept it simple – small loans with small interest.
Three years later, Don Francisco had already accumulated a remarkable book of clients and had gained a reputation for reliable money lending. Once he took the initiative to do the same with gold, the idea of uniting gold with the lending process was born. And so, in 1980 Monte de Piedad® was officially established. With a name originating from a rich history of pawnshops around the world – a name, which literally means “mount of mercy” – Don Francisco never put profits before people.
Unlike his competition, as the business grew, Don Francisco stayed true to its origins and continued to solidify Monte de Piedad® as a pillar of the community.

Monte de Piedad® is now California’s premier family-owned pawn shop with 13 locations throughout San Diego County.
Our reputation speaks for itself. We offer immediate cash loans with no recourse collateral, or pawn loans for our customers, which we attach with collateral.
In addition, we also have a wide variety of merchandise, such as fine jewelry and electronics, available for sale at reduced prices. More importantly, however, Monte de Piedad® has a 36-year history of helping our customers find smarter financial solutions and avoid financial hardship for generations.
